“A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.” Proverbs 25:28
A lack of discipline in our finances can leave us struggling when unexpected seasons of lack come because we never learned to save. A lack of discipline with our time can leave us endlessly scrolling through social media and consuming entertainment while neglecting quality time with God. Then we wonder why we don’t hear from Him. Perhaps He is speaking, but are we listening?
Even our eating can reveal a lack of self-control. When indulgence becomes our pattern, it can eventually affect our health and limit the things we are able to enjoy.
A Fruit of the Spirit
Self-control, however, is not simply about having enough willpower to manage ourselves. It is a fruit of the Spirit. True self-control grows as we become rooted in God and allow His Word to shape, correct, and transform us.
This is where Paul’s words in Philippians become so powerful. He said he had learned to be content whether he had much or little, whether he was in abundance or in need. His circumstances did not determine his contentment because his confidence was not ultimately in what he had—it was in Christ.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
Paul understood something we often forget: our ability to endure, remain content, and exercise self-control is not rooted in our own strength. It comes from dependence on God.
The Deeper Question
Sometimes our lack of self-control reveals that we are trying to make ourselves sufficient. We hold tightly to money, time, comfort, food, possessions, or our plans because we struggle to trust that God will provide what we need.
But God is sovereign. He is the One who sustains, provides, protects, and holds all things together.
So perhaps the deeper question behind self-control is not simply, “Can I control myself?” but “Do I trust God enough to surrender control to Him?”
An Invitation to Surrender
My encouragement to you today is simple: trust God with your life. Lay before Him the things you have been trying to control and trust Him to make a way. He is a good Father who knows what His children need and delights in giving good gifts.
Self-control is not about holding everything together ourselves. It is learning to surrender everything to the One who already holds it all together.
Be blessed,
